From SEO to
AI Decision Governance

One discipline for 25 years: make sure the machines that decide who gets found, trusted, and chosen represent you accurately - and can prove it. The machines changed. The discipline didn't.

People assume "SEO guy" and "AI governance expert" are two different careers. They're not. They're the same job, done across three generations of machine.

Since 1999, one question has run through everything I've built: when a system decides who gets found, believed, and chosen, is your company represented accurately - and can you prove it? For years that system was a search engine. Today it's the AI models quietly deciding what your company gets recommended for, screened out of, and priced on. Same question. Far higher stakes.

I've worked that question the whole way up the stack - for energy and industrial operators specifically - from search rankings, to AI-answer visibility, to the governed, auditable decisions that now run a business. Here's the arc.

The throughline, in three eras

Make sure buyers find you. Leading EWR Digital and - since 2009 - hosting The Best SEO Podcast, the work was controlling how search algorithms represented and ranked a company. Eight books, bylines in Entrepreneur and Search Engine Journal, and a client base heavy in energy and industrial. Even then the real skill wasn't "keywords" - it was entity accuracy: getting a machine to understand exactly who you are and surface you correctly.

2022-Now · Answer Engines

Search became answers - same problem, new machine. When buyers, partners, and capital started asking AI assistants instead of typing queries, visibility collapsed from ten blue links into a single generated answer. I named and registered the discipline for winning it - LLM Visibility® - and wrote the book on it. Generative and answer-engine optimization aren't a new field; they're the search problem, relocated to a model that now speaks in the first person about your company.

Now · AI Decision Governance

AI stopped just finding you and started deciding about you. Recommendation, screening, pricing, risk - models now make consequential decisions about your company, and most of them are invisible to the board. Governing them is the same discipline at its highest stakes: make the decisions visible, keep the inputs accurate, and make the outcomes defensible to regulators, partners, and courts. That's Digital Information Governance® (DIG®, USPTO Reg. 8147558) - the framework behind ModalPoint and my keynotes.

The machines changed.
The discipline didn't.

Three eras, one throughline - accurate representation and defensible decisions, built for operators who can't afford to guess. That continuity is the point: I'm not a futurist who pivoted into AI. I'm the practitioner who has been governing how machines treat companies the whole time.

If you're vetting me for a stage or a boardroom, this is the short version: the SEO background isn't a past life I've moved on from - it's the 25-year proof that I understand how machines decide, from the inside. The same instinct that got energy companies found in Google is what now keeps their AI decisions accurate, auditable, and defensible.
